Beer Hacket with Knighton

Beer Hacket, a parish in the hundred, union and division of Sherborne, 4 miles south-west from Sherborne, and 4 miles south-east from Yeovil station, on a small river, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Dorset, and deanery of Shaftesbury, contained, in 1851, 903 acres, and, with the tything of Knighton, 107 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, value £201, exempt from Visitation, a peculiar of the Dean of Salisbury, and in the patronage of Sir John Munden, and W.Helyar Esq., alternately; the Rev. Hugh Helyar is the incumbent. The church is dedicated to St Michael.

Beer Hackett with Knighton

Beer Hackett is a parish, on a small stream which flows into the Yeo, 1 mile from Yetminster station on the Weymouth branch of the Great Western railway, 4 miles south-west from Sherborne and 5 miles south-east from Yeovil, in the Northern division of the county, county court district of Yeovil, hundred, union, and petty sessional division, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sherborne, and diocese of Salisbury. The church of St Michael is a stone building in the early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing 3 bells; the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Frank Newington B.A., vicar of Osmington, who died October 10, 1877: the church was rebuilt in 1882, with the exception of the tower, at a cost of about £1,100, and in 1897 the tower was rebuilt at a cost of £570: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1549. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £242, in the gift of A.S.Williams esq. and held since 1921 by the Rev. John Luck L.Th. of Durham University, who resides at Yetminster. The principal landowner is Major F.J.B.D.Wingfield-Digby D.S.O., D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor. The soil is clay; subsoil, rock. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 918 acres, rateable value, £1,555; the population in 1911, including the tything of Knighton, 1 mile south-east, was 77.
