Note:- Article in the Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette - Tue 12 July 1870 -- "ALLEGED BIGAMY : - - In 1838, a masons labourer named Charles AMOR, living in Grove Buildings, married a wife. They did not live together very happily, and at length the wife left him and went away he knew not whether - perhaps he didn't care either. For thirteen years he heard nothing of her, and a year later ago last May he married a woman named LOADER. A few days ago the first wife came to Dorchester, went to her husbands house, and was confronted by wife No. 2. They did not agree very well, and the result was the man was apprehended for bigamy. He was taken before the Mayor on Sunday, and remanded till Wednesday next. His plea is that he heard she died at Poole, and was buried in the cemetery there.

[Note:- This is Jesse COUSINS (1853-1927) who was baptised at Wimborne Minster 17th July 1853 the son of a Policeman John COUSINS (1826-1892) and Sarah Maria nee CHAPPLE (1825-1897). In 1861 Census the family was living at Cuckholds Row in Fordington Jesse then only aged 7.

HMS WARRIOR joined the Channel Squadron on 2nd March 1870 when Captain Henry Glyn* assumed command of the ship.". As far as I can tell the above arrest resulted in his discharge from HMS Warrior. After discharge from Dorchester Prison on 10th Feb 1871 Jesse joined as a private in the 13th Light Infantry Regiment, his service being recorded from 27th March 1871. He is shown in the April 1871 Census based in the district Military Camp at St Mary's Pembrokeshire in Wales. He served as a private for 3 years and 5 months before transfer to the 75th where he served until 3rd Aug 1874 when he was tried by the Army for entering a Public House when on escort duty and lost his good conduct pay. He was released from service and transferred to the reserves on 30th Nov 1875 serving at Dorchester until 18th Apr 1878 when he was recalled to the Army serving in the 17th Brigade there until 31st July 1878. He married at Wimborne Minster to Sarah Jane DOLLOW (1847-1926) on 14th July 1878. They went to Hampreston Dorset and raised a family of 3 children.

"John HELLYAR" , Post office messenger, and Edwin GILBERT, of the rifle brigade, were charged, the former with stealing 8s. 6d worth of stamps the property of the Postmaster General, and the latter with feloniously receiving them. The particulars of the affair appear in the adjoined testimony:- Joseph LEGG said: I am assistant-clerk in the Dorchester Post Office. Last Friday, the fifth inst., at half past nine o'clock p.m., I made up some stamps for the postmistress of Upwey, which were put in a large envelope and sealed and tied. There were 10s worth of sixpenny stamps and 10s 2d worth of penny stamps put in the envelope. The envelope was placed in a bag with other letters. I wrote on the margin of the sixpenny stamps ". I did not see the bag after that. The sixpenny stamps now produced are those I put in the envelop. I identify them by the writing in the margin. John HELLYAR is the rural messenger between Dorchester and Upwey. It was his duty to take the sealed bag to the postmistress of Upwey. It was Stephen House's duty to seal the bag about five o'clock the next evening before it was handed to HELLYAR. P.C. William PEARCE deposed: On Monday last about half past three o'clock p.m. from information I received, I apprehended Edwin GILBERT at the Chequers Inn, and charged him with receiving 8s. 6d worth of postage stamps and also with selling them at the Dorchester Post Office. He said he knew nothing about it. I charged him with receiving the stamps from John HELLYAR. On the way to the police station the prisoner Gilbert stated that he met the prisoner Hellyar on Saturday evening at the Chequers, and Hellyar have him the 8s.6d worth of sixpenny stamps and asked him if he would sell them for him at the Post Office. He (Gilbert) did sell the stamps, but did not know anything about it and would not have had it happen for £10. P.C.George ELFORD: On Monday last 8th Inst, from information I received I apprehended the prisoner John HELLYAR at the Red Lion Inn, Dorchester and charged him with stealing a quantity of stamps from a letter bag which it was his duty to take to Upwey. He (Hellyar) answered "I know nothing at all about it. I received the 8s 6d worth of stamps from Mr PARSONS Post master of Dorchester with the words 'We have no shilling stamps written in the margin. I also received 14 penny stamps from Francis PORTER" [Note:- Licenced Victualler of the Chequers Inn]. This morning in consequence of something his wife said Hellyar observed "It is no use telling any more lies about it; I stole the stamps and there's an end to it. Gilbert now declared his innocence - he simply cashed the stamps as a kindness to Hellyar. He said he came from Aldershot, being now on furlough. The accused Hellyar was remanded until next Saturday when a solicitor from London will appear to prosecute on behalf of the postal authorities. The young man Gilbert who seems to have been innocently entangled in the matter was released from custody, the magistrate directing that a summons be issued for his appearance on Saturday as a witness in the case.

Article Weymouth Telegram - Friday 13th March 1874 -- POST OFFICE ROBBERY:

John HELLYAR, 30, Post office rural messenger, pleaded guilty to stealing on 6th December whilst employed in Her Majesty's Post-Office, a letter containing a Pound's worth of postage stamps.

Judge: How long have you been in service of the Post Office? -- Prisoner : Between 5 and 6 years my Lord. Judge: You have pleaded guilty to violating the sanctity of the Post Office bag stealing out of it 10s worth of 1d and 10s worth of 6d stamps. You are a person who occupied up to this time a place of very considerable trust as a messenger of the Dorchester Post Office, conveying to the outlying districts around Dorchester postal bags. Being in the public service in a responsible position, you are found violating your trust in the grossest possible manner; and it is invariably the usage of this Bench to deal with such offenders with the greatest severity. It is essential in a country like this that the trust reposed in servants of the Post Office should be looked upon as sacred; and the man who violates that trust deserves very great punishment. The sentence of the Court was that he be kept in PENAL SEVITUDE FOR FIVE YEARS

[Note:- Charles Gill FOOT (1823-1886) Baptised All Saints Church Dorchester on 7th Dec 1823 the son of an auctioneer John FOOT (1788-1851) by his wife Sarah nee Gill (1791-1871). He initially trained as a cabinet maker's apprentice and is living with his family in East Parade in June 1841 aged 17. Still there in 1851 unmarried age 27 but his trade has now changed to that of a harness maker. He was buried at FStG aged 62 on 13th Oct 1886.

Robert HIBBS was brought up on remand charged with stealing a double barreled gun, a brace of pistols, and other articles the property of Mr.M.C.WESTON. [Note:- Post Office Directory 1875 - Montague Charles WESTON was a Solicitor and Treasurer for the Borough of Dorchester and lived at 50 High West Street ]

The prisoner was in the prosecutors employ as clerk from the 22nd March to the middle of November last, and stole at various times from cases in the office where he sat guns, pistols, shot pouches, powder flasks, and a variety of articles connected with shooting, and also numerous fishing implements.
Mr Atthur LOCK appeared on behalf of the prisoner and asked that he case might be taken as one charge. The young man was very sorry for what he had done, and would throw himself on the mercy of the court.
The bench decided to hear the circumstances of the case.
Mr Weston, having had certain information, went to examine his gun cases last Monday, and found them locked, but the keys were missing. Getting them picked he discovered one of his double barreled guns gone with the accompanying powder flask and shot pouch; also the apparatus connected with a second gun; the third case seemed to be as when he last saw it. The gun stock was also gone, and a brace of pistols from a mahogany case. This case was locked but the top panel had been loosened. A lot of apparatus from a square box in one of the cases was entirely gone, excepting a scratch brush. Shot powder wadding and caps had also disappeared. from a fishing basket he missed part of a landing net, a reel and line for a salmon rod, ditto for a trout rod, and artificial flies. Besides these were a number of envelopes embossed with his crest. Put the value nominally at £5, but would not have lost them for four times the amount.
By Mr LOCK: Could not say when he last saw all the things, but since Hibbs had been with him.
William GREEN of Fordington said about the middle of August, prisoner brought the double barrelled gun produced to him and he had it for about a month. Prisoner said his master, Mr Weston, had lent it to him, and he (witness) could have it till he got a licence. About the middle of September Hibbs fetched the gun, saying he was going rabbit shooting the following day. Sergeant PURTELL was with Hibbs at that time. Saw Hibbs shooting with the gun subsequently. After that prisoner said his master had made him a present of the gun, and he sold it to Mr PURTELL for £2. On 26th October Hibbs and an artillery man came to his house with a pistol, Hibbs asking him to buy it. The pistol was "rusty as an old horse shoe" and he told him he did not want it. Prisoner said he had bought it of a young man in the town for 2s and he should have it for 2s 6d. At that price he purchased it. A powder flask Hibbs left with him some time in August. About the 11th November Hibbs offered him several other articles connected with shooting, and he gave 2s for them. The following day prisoner gave him a couple of packets of envelopes embossed with Mr Weston's crest. A short time since Hibbs asked him to buy a well finished duck gun which was in Mr Weston's office, but he did not. In August Hibbs asked him if he wanted a gun stock, as there was a very handsome one without barrels up in Mr Weston's office, if he would go up he could put it in his pocket and take it away. He said Mr Weston was away. Witness told him he would not go to Mr Weston's on any account in his absence, and gave him a good talking to about it. On another occasion Hibbs left a landing net at his house.
The Town Clerk said after what had taken place in August how was it he dealt with him as to all these different articles?
Witness said he never suspected him at all.
Mr SYMONDS said it was a pity he had not taken further proceedings that "Talking" in August, as that might probably have saved Hibbs from being in the position in which he now was. Cross-examined by Mr Lock: was a jeweler and silversmith by trade. Had taken out a gun licence for 23 years and was one of the best shots in England. The pistol;s had hair-triggers, but when he gave 2s 6d for one he did not know that. Would not have given 4s for it.


Sergeant PURTELL of the Dorset Militia said in the early part of November prisoner asked him to clean a gun for him, and he did so. Afterwards he heard Hibbs had sold it. Asked him for how much and he said 30s. Witness said he would have given him £2 for it and on the 15th Hibbs sold him the gun for £2. At another time he bought of prisoner a shot pouch and powder flask for £s and a fortnight ago Hibbs left at his house a small vice and other little things which witness called rubbish.
Edwin John CHURCHILL, apprentice to Mr Jeffery gunsmith said just after the Militia was disbanded Hibbs offered him a pistol; he bought it for 2s 6d and sold it for 5s to a man named Gillingham. About a month later witness was out shooting small birds with Hibbs when he offered for sale a powder flask which he subsequently gave him 2s 6d. Hibbs said his master had made him a present of it, with a gun and other things. On another shooting excursion he bought a shot pouch of Hibbs for 2s 6d. On the 6th November prisoner brought him the stock gun, for which he agreed to pay 5s, and the same evening a powder flask, for the two of which he paid 6s. A flask new would cost 7s or 8s.
Cross examined: Hibbs put his price on most things. Did not suspect he had stolen them as he had known him from the time they went to school together.
Joseph GROVES, lodging at the last witness's father's spoke to witnessing the deal with Churchill and Hibbs and after the latter had gone said to Churchill it was a very nice powder flask, and he should like to buy some at that price. He bought it for 2s and sold it to Mr Jeffery for the same sum. Mr.C.JEFFERY gunsmith deposed to purchasing the flask for 2s and handing it to the police.
Sergeant TOOGOOD, Dorset Militia paid 3s 6d to Hibbs the beginning of July for a salmon reel and line which his nephew had bought him.
Mr WESTON said the reel cost 25s and the line 12s 6d and he had never used them.
William GILLINGHAM of Yetminster spoke of paying William Churchill 5s 6d for one of the pistols.
Supt COWARD proved receiving the articles spoken to from the several witnesses and apprehended Hibbs who when charged said !All right, Ill go quietly".
Mr Lock asked for the case to be dealt with summarily and Mr Weston said he should offer no objection to that course. The magistrates retired to consider whether there were any circumstances to preclude the exercise of their summary jurisdiction. On returning Mr Galpin said they would hear anything Mr Lock had to say.
Mr Lock said he could only plead that Hibbs was very sorry for what he had done. Committal to the Sessions would be the ruin of him, and he hoped that as a young man such punishment as they might give him would have the effect of giving him another chance and leading him to resolve on a better course of life. He had fallen into bad company and been led to rob his master, but he asked them, as this was his first offence, to take the lenient course in dealing with him. Mr Weston said he left the case entirely in the hands of the magistrates. Mr Galpin said the Bench considered it such a serious offence that they thought it right to send the case to the sessions. Bail refused at present.

[Note:- Article Dorset County Express and Agricultural Gazette Tue 16th Jan 1877 Page 2 - Edwin CHURCHILL a youth in the employ of Mr Jeffery gunsmith, High East Street, and James HANHAM another lad lately in the service of Ensor & Co grocers were charged with stealing a bottle of Whiskey and a bottle of brandy, the property of Mr.T.S.BIGGS, wine and spirit merchant of Cornhill on Saturday morning. Mr Burnett for the prosecution and Mr A Pope for the defense. -- It appeared that prosecutor had supplied the wines &c at the farmers ball at the Corn Exchange on Friday night, and next morning whilst two of his assistants named Old and Goldring were engaged in packing up the surplus stock to take back to the stores a couple of bottles were missed, one containing pale brandy and the other Irish whiskey, Shortly afterwards the prisoner Churchill came to the Hall with one of the bottles, saying it had been given him by some other lad, but as this seemed a very doubtful story the prisoner was given in custody. The prisoner Hanham and some other lads had been seen near the Town Hall on the morning of the robbery and as the former was suspected,the police on Sunday went to the stables where Hanham was employee, and after a search found the missing bottle of brandy, which was stamped with Mr Biggs name, concealed in a heap of manure. Hanham who was present at the time and assisting in the search being then apprehended by Police constable CARTER. -- In defense it was urged that several others had access to the stables besides Hanham who denied all knowledge of the robbery, Churchill repeating his former statement as to having been given the bottle by another lad. Both received good characters -- After some deliberation the case against Hanham was dismissed, though the magistrate said they considered there was a good deal of suspicion about the case; and Churchill was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment with hard labour. ]
