Testamentum Roberti de Dogrell probatum xx ^o december 1576

In the name of God Amen the 21 ^st day of November in the year of our Lord God 1576.

I Robert Dogrell of Pierston in the parish of Gillingham in the diocese of Bristol, sick in body but of whole and perfect memory and mind do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First I bequeath my soul to almighty God and my body to be buried in the church yard of Gillingham aforesaid.

Item: I give and bequeath to the church of Gillingham, 5 shillings

Item: I give to the poor people of Gillingham 12d [12 pence = 1 shilling]

Item: I give to John Dogrell of Pierston 40 shillings [about £708 today]of good current money of England.

Item: I give to the eldest daughter of the said John, one ewe and one chilver hog. [chilver hog; ewe, dialect the name of a female sheep from Christmas till shear time]

Item: I give to the youngest daughter of the said John one ewe and one chilver hog.

Item: I give and bequeath to John Dogrell , son to Henry Dogrell, one ewe and one lamb.

Item: I give to Joane Dogrell, daughter to Henry Dogrell aforesaid, one hog sheep.

Item: I give and bequeath to Thomas Harrys of Pentridge [now incorporated into Sixpenny Handley], 2 bushels of peason [= plural of peas] and 2 bushels of barley.

Item: I give and bequeath to Henry Dogrell the lease of a ground for 6 years lying in East Woodyates [in the parish of Pentridge] called by the name of 'Goare.'

Item: I give and bequeath to Thomas Harrys aforesaid in money at 20 shillings [= £1] [ of ] or the first year of the 6 years out of the for ^e named ground, at hys heyed [i.e., he decides] which to take.

All the rest of my goods not given nor bequeathed and whatsoever is my goods or chattels and all that I have I give wholly to Henry Dogrell my sone whom I make my whole executorwilling him out of the same goods to pay any funeral expense and to see my body laid in the earth.

And I further ordain and appoint my Well-beloved in Christ, Steven Pople and Augustine Browne my true and trusted overseers of this my last will and testament.
