BISHOP'S
TRANSCRIPTS FOR RADIPOLE, DORSET 1779-1812
This
transcript of the first bundle of Bishop's Transcripts for Radipole was made
by Will Stevens from the originals, which are held at the Wiltshire County
Record Office.
The
BTs themselves are written on pieces of paper of varying size. They are
generally untidy, and are often difficult to read, especially the BT for 1797,
which is crumpled and stained with ancient mud, and the BT for 1812, which was
written in a large sprawling hand apparently by George Luckham, a churchwarden.
In fact, neither of the two incumbents involved, the Revd T Grove, or the Revd
William Gorton, seems to have taken the job of preparing BTs particularly
seriously.
This
transcript is intended to be a complete line-by-line representation of what is
on the documents. Question marks are used to indicate doubtful words, and other
comments are in square brackets. Lines, like the one below, indicate where one
document ends and the next begins. For convenience, personal names have been
emboldened. The foreign and foreign-seeming names are probably accounted for by
the presence of troops in the area.
Researchers
should be aware that for considerable periods, the same incumbent was
responsible for both Radipole and Melcombe Regis, and there are consequently
many Radipole entries in the Melcombe Regis Registers and BTs. In connection
with this, there is appended below a transcription of a list prepared by the
Revd William Gorton in 1813 of all the Registers for Radipole and Melcombe Regis
which were then in existence. The original is filed with the BTs at the
Wiltshire County Record Office.

[The
following sheet is filed with the BTs, and is of interest in that it lists the
Parish Registers for Melcombe Regis and Radipole which were in existence in
1812. Although the wording is confused, the note at the end seems to indicate
that the Registers for baptisms and burials at least were kept at Melcombe
Regis, and that the incumbent, presumably, relied on notes or memory when making
entries for Radipole. This is supported by the later evidence from Census
Returns that some Radipole christenings went unrecorded.]
