Register of Electors 1918

This was the first register of electors made following the Representation of the People Act 1918 and was used for the 1918 General Election. The rules about who could vote were very complex. Prior to this Act it was generally only the heads of household who could vote. Women were excluded from parliamentary elections. Following the Act almost all men aged 21 had the vote. The rules for women were more restrictive and included a minimum age of 30. Naval and military voters aged 19 or 20 at the end of the Great War were also entitled to vote in parliamentary elections. Because of the large number of men serving in the armed forces special provision was made for them to vote. They were referred to as " absent voters" and details of their service number, etc. is given in an absent voters list. Details from this list have been included in the table below.
The term " successive" (shown below where applicable) was used for those people who had recently moved house. Special provision was made for people who moved within the parish without a gap, who would otherwise not be entitled to a vote.
Abbreviations: R - Residence, BP - Business Premises, O - Occupation, HO - through Husband's Occupation, NM - Naval or Military; indicate how an elector qualified to vote in parliamentary and local government elections.
Because of the different rules some electors could only vote in parliamentary elections and some only in local government elections, although there was no one in this latter category in Stratton.
There were a total of 133 electors for parliamentary elections, 77 men and 56 women.
27 of the men were absent voters.
