This parish register is a copy of the original with the briefest of entries and I think this is the burial of Robert as they give the same name to a later child and we know most of their children die in infancy.

    (12) Charlotte bap HT 12th April 1770. She survived as she gives birth to a bastard child Thomas Canterbury bap HT 17 Mar 1790. The Overseers of the poor for HT identified the father as Sydenham Sabine the son of John SABINE Esq who paid them £20 in full settlement of any claim against him. See entry in Vestry Minutes for HT dated 30th Aug 1790 for more background.Thomas Canterbury became a mariner at a very young age as he was arrested along with another sailor Benjamin Waterhouse of Chatham aged 16 who was also charged with the same offence of 'feloniously damaging a ship at sea.' They were incarcerated in the Dorset County Gaol situated in Dorchester on 20th Sep 1804. They were tranferred to Newgate Prison in the City of London to stand trial on 2nd Jan 1805. From the trial it appears that the ship was a sloop the property of a Benjamin Kerridge and they were both delivered to Portsmouth and put on board the prison hulk "Captivity" which was moored at Portsmouth in March 1805. Unfortunately there is a note on the Hulk Prison Register that although his partner in crime Benjamin Woodhouse was transported on the ship Fortune on 9th Jan 1806 , Thomas Canterbury was drowned on 5th July 1805.

[Note:- Richard LAKE (1733-1810) was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 12th Oct 1733 the son of Henry LAKE from Salisbury and Avis ALDER who had married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 24th Feb 1717/18. He is listed in the 1758 Militia List for the Parish of Holy Trinity as being a Carpenter by trade and living in Colliton Row. After marriage here in 1761 they had 3 children as shown below. By 1777 Richard LAKE was working closely with another Carpenter called Thomas GRITTON who lived in All Saints Parish with his wife Ann. In 1777 they secured between them a contract to erect a new porch covered in lead at the County Gaol and their bill was placed before the April Quarter Sessions for that year for authorisation to the Western Treasurer of Dorset. Although convened at Sherborne on 8th April as was traditional it adjourned to the Antelope Inn in Dorchester on the 26th of that month to deal with matters more related to the Dorchester area.. The Court authorised a payment of £10 14s for the work they had undertaken. This work seem to have established them as the joiners or carpenters of choice for work needed at the Gaol. Over the next 14 years (1777-1791) they continued to present bills to the Quarter Sessions for authorisation of work they had jointly undertaken at the gaol including in 1784 work done at the County Hall.

From 1780 Land Tax returns survive as duplicates had to be lodged with the Clerk of the Peace so they could be used to establish the qualifications of Parliamentary Voters. We are fortunate that the very first return completed on 31st May 1780 was actually completed by Richard Lake as he had been appointed assessor for the tything of Coliton Row. He lists himself as the occupier of two properties owned by William CHURCHILL Esq who paid a tax of 2 shillings on one and 4 shillings 2 pence on the other for that year. He completes returns as asseror for Colliton Row up to 1785. In 1787 he has moved to a larger property assessed at 13s 8d owned by William Davis. By 1790 he is listed within the Holy Trinity Parish general returns as both Proprietor and occupier paying just over 13 shillings tax a year until his death in 1810.

Sarah LAKE nee JONES (bur.1783), recorded as the wife of Richard LAKE was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 2nd Feb 1783. See also Vestry minutes 1st June 1783 Richard LAKE was Overseer of the Poor for Holy Trinity Parish. Richard married for a second time to Sarah GILLETT at Holy Trinity Church on 9th May 1785. Unfortunately Rebecca Lake their first child died at the age of 7 and was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 12th Oct 1834.  They had a third daughter Elizabeth Lake born during the 4th qtr 1838 (GRO 8/50) who was probably also baptised at Durngate Independent Church as records on ancestry.com only extend up to 1837.  She was however aged 12 and living with her parents in 1851. Phillip LAKE of Pease Lane in Dorchester is shown on the electoral register for Stratton for the year 1841 as owner of a copyhold house there in which William Spracking was the tenant. Their 2nd child Mary Ann Lake unfortunately died at the age of 20 years residence recorded as Pease Lane and buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 12th March 1852. Phillip LAKE died at the age of 59 and was buried at HT on 6th July 1855. Their surviving 3rd child, Elizabeth LAKE, appears to have had a civil marriage to Henry Palmer a native of Sherborne in Dorchester during 2nd qtr 1858 (GRO 5a/594). After marriage Henry and Elizabeth lived in Charles Street in All Saints Parish with her widowed mother Mary LAKE. Mary is recorded in the 1861 Census as head of the family and an upholsteress by trade aged 63. By 1871 Mary, her daughter and son-in-law all moved to live at Evcott St in St Georges parish in Bloomsbury in London where Henry Palmer worked as a printer compositor Mary now aged 73. By 1881 they were all living at 14 Stanfield St in Islington ]

They had 3 children and she died there at the age of 82 being buried there on 29th March 1883.

      (2.4) Richard Lake (1803-1807) bap Stratton 31st May 1803 and buried aged 4 1st Apr 1807

Family Trees on line maintain that he married at Radipole on 15th Oct 1832 as Robert George LAKE (1805-1887) to Frances STAPLEY (1804-1896) and to have 6 children between 1833 and 1846.They were living in Melcombe Regis in 1841 but then settled in Millbrook, Hampshire.

    (3) William Lake (1766-1838) bap HT 21st Sep 1766. His marriage in the parish of Somerton in Somerset on 31st Dec 1792 to Jesse BARNARD (1768-1825) confirms that William is from Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester. The family tree on ancestry.com shows that Jesse had 11 children between 1794 and 1810 before she died at the age of 58 and was buried at Somerton on 4th Aug 1825. Many of his children with Jesse died in infancy or young adulthood with only 2 girls known to have married, Hebe in 1824 and Mary Ann in 1827. William was buried at Somerton on 13th June 1838 aged 72.

[Note:- John BARTLETT (1742- 1790) was the 4th child from the marriage of William BARTLETT (1711/2-1772) to Susannah WHITE who married at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 13th July 1735. The witness William CLARK was his brother-in-law by his youngest sister Ann. After marriage they returned to live in his parish of St Peters where they raised a family of at least 6 children as shown below (1771-1777). John died intestate and was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 18th Mar 1790. I am fairly sure that Mary died aged 76 and was buried at St George Church in Fordington on 1st Apr 1821 when she is described as Mary the wife of John BARTLETT from All Saints Parish. Her age is contemporary with his. My one concern is that she is referred to as his wife rather than his widow but I think she may well have lived with her son James in All Saints Parish and in her final years with her son John and his family who lived in Fordington from 1798 to 1836. Children from this marriage: -

    (1) Mary Bartlett (1770- ) bap 24th Mar 1770 at St Peters Church Dorchester

    (2) James Bartlett (1771- ) bap St Peters Church in Dorchester on 4th May 1771. James married circa 1797 to a Mary (c 1772 - 1803) (Surname unknown) and they had the children listed below all baptised at All Saints Church. No other baptisms to follow these could be found anywhere in Dorset. I think this is because Mary died in childbirth and is the Mary Bartlett buried at St Georges Church in Fordington on 29th July 1803. I have assumed for now that the child survived birth and was named Elizabeth four and a half months later by James :-

(2.1) Edward Bartlett (1798- )bap All Saints Church Dorchester 2nd Sep 1798 recorded as the son of James and Mary Bartlett

Samuel HAYNE (1749-1813) was baptised in nearby St Michael's church in the parish of Stinsford in Dorset on 27th July 1748 the son of John HAYNE by his 2nd wife Alicia PREYTER. John and Alicia had married at Stinsford on 30th March 1747, Alicia being the widow of Michael PRETOR of North Petherton in Somerset. Rebecca TILLEY (1754-1826) was probably another child of William and Mary TILLEY of Puddletown but her baptism appears to have been omitted from the parish register [we know other entries were omitted by the vicar and there is a conveinient gap between the birth of their other children]. After marriage they settled to live in Fordington where Samuel operated a business as a linen draper. By 1801 it was a well established family business and the Company of Freemen Records show that on 23rd May 1801 Samuel and Rebecca took on an apprentice Keturah Hallett whilst Rebecca with their daughter Alicia (now aged 19) took on a second apprentice, Mary Jane Kexton, to teach them the Millinery business.

Samuel Hayne died at the age of 64 and was buried in St Georges Churchyard on 18th Feb 1813. His death was reported in the Taunton Courier on the 25th of that month where we learn that he was a linen draper by trade. A Letter of Administration for his estate was granted
to his widow Rebecca on 8th June 1813. Rebecca lived to the age of 72 being buried st FStG 9th Oct 1826. Children from this marriage:-

    (1) Samuel Hayne (1774-1774) buried at FStG 14th Jan 1774, does not appear to have been baptised so may have been a still birth.

    (2) Ann Hayne (b.1775) probably born late in 1775 and bap FStG 24th Jan 1776, beneficiary under her grandfather John HAYNE's will dated 1797 when unmarried, she married Thomas HITT of the parish of Osmington by Licence at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 28th Aug 1803.

    (3) Rebecca Hayne (1776-1814) bap FStG 30th Oct 1776, beneficiary in her own right under her grandfather John HAYNE's will dated 1797 which also states that she is the wife of Richard COLE whom she married at St George's church in Fordington in 1796.

He started his own grocery business in Dorchester being admitted into the Company of Freemen on 27th June 1803. He married an Elizabeth circa 1807 and was described in the 1851 census as a "Grocer, Maltster, Soap Boiler, Spirit Merchant, Corn Merchant and Farmer occupying 310 acres and employing 50 men".He was buried at FStG 14 Apr 1868 aged 89 years by which time he was living on Fordington Hill. She died at Weymouth in the last quarter of 1855 leaving a Will dated 3rd Jan 1851.

    (6) Elizabeth Hayne (1782-1864), The 1851 Census confirms that Elizabeth and her younger sister Mary Ann were both born at the old family home in the parish of Ibberton in Dorset. See link to Hayne Family above for more information. [Note:- William VALLENCE [VALLENS] (1737-1775) was the 4th child from the marriage of Francis VALLENS to Maria CORNING at Mintern Magna in Dorset on 7th Sep 1726. He was baptised at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 31st May 1737. Aged 17 William enlisted into the 65th Regiment of Foot but became ill with an incurable ulcer and was discharged as medically unfit after serving for 19 years. He received a pension from the Royal Hospital Chelsea from 17th Sep 1773. He returned to live at Dorchester and married Rebecca PADDOCK. As expected William soon died and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 3rd Nov 1775. They appear to have had two children, but both were baptised after Williams death. Given that he knew he did not have long to live when he left the Army, It's just possible that the reason for the marriage may have been because Rebecca was heavily pregnant and she would be better placed as a widow when she gave birth. Birth would have had to have been shortly after marriage for her to be pregnant again with a second child when he died.

William the son of William and Rebecca VALLENCE was baptised at St Peters church on 14th Jan 1776, just over 2 months after her husbands death so there is no real doubt that he was their son. Following William Senior's death Rebecca lost William's Pension so it is reasonable to find that she moved to live in Holy Trinity parish (probably into cheaper accommodation) where a daughter she named Rebecca after herself was baptised on 8th June 1777. With two young children as expected Rebecca re-married, to Thomas PANSHARD at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 5th Nov 1781. ]

186. John OLDIS of the parish of Holy Trinity & Mary LAKE of the parish of Holy Trinity were married by Banns 26-May 1783 (PR) by me Rev Samuel Barry Curate (his signature her mark) witnesses Richard Oliver & William Clark (PR)

[Note:- Mary LAKE may have been the 2nd child from the marriage of Charles LAKE to Mary OLIVER at St Peters Church on 20th Sep 1747. She had been baptised at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 11th Apr 1751 and the daughter of a black man born in the West Indies. We have no information about her mother but black people were very rare in Dorchester at this period and may well therefore have been of mixed parentage. If this is her marriage she would have been about 32 years old at marriage. John OLDIS (1767-1817) however appears to have been baptised at Dorchester on 28th Aug 1767 the son of John OLDIS and Elizabeth OLDE (1730-1794). If correct he would have been 16 at marriage which seems to be a large disparity in ages. This John OLDIS died at the age of 49 being buried at HT on 27th Oct 1817 and is said to have been from 'that part of West Street in St Peters Parish' in Dorchester. A Mary OLDIS of High West Street in St Peters Parish was also buried at St Peters Church on 7th Feb 1822 but her age is given as being 43 (I have checked the original images to ensure no transcription error) She cannot be Mary LAKE above as she would only have been 4 years old at marriage. This burial entry also does not state that she was a widow which could be significant.]

[Note:- John BARTLETT (c1757 - 1798) Not so far located his ancestry. I have estimated his birth as circa 1757 based on the average age at which men married in 18th Century which was 27. According to the Letter of Administration granted to his widow in 1798 he was a Baker by trade.

Mary BAKER (1761- aft 1798) was baptised at St peters Church on 6th May 1761 the 3rd child from the marriage of Sydenham BAKER to Mary DEAR at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 22nd Aug 1756. After marriage they settled in his parish of Holy Trinity where they had their first two two children baptised as shown below. We then have a ten year unexplained gap before their 3rd known child was baptised at St Peters Church : John Bartlett (c1760-1798) was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 6th Mar 1798. A Letter of Administration for his estate 0f £300 It was granted to his widow and relict Mary BARTLETT on 1st Oct 1798.

[Note:- Benjamin PAUL (1747-1836) joined the 1st Regiment of Dragoons. in Aug 1779 and served for 19 years and 2 months before he was medically retired diagnosed as being 'worn out and hurt inwardly'. This qualified him for a Pension which he recieved from 8th Oct 1798. I have not been able to locate any other details of his Military career. He married above to Ann MORES in 1784 and I have only been able to locate three children as shown below. At some point after retirement he must have been able to enlist into the Dorset Militia as he is recorded in the return of Militia Vacancies for the Western Regiment of Dorset from 1814 to 1816, recorded as Benjamin PAUL resident in Holy Trinity Parish Dorchester a Cordwainer by trade, vacancy caused by his promotion to Drummer on 17th May 1813. Benjamin PAUL died at West Back Street Dorchester being buriied at Holy Trinity Church on 23rd Oct 1836 aged 84 years. Ann, described as the relict of Benjamin PAUL of Henning's Town in the Parish of Fordington was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester aged 86 years on 13th Feb 1837.

      (1) Benjamin PAUL (1795-1832) The only likely baptism that I have managed to locate is at All Saints Church Kingston upon Thames in Surrey which is recorded as "Benjamin, son of Benjamin & Ann PAUL Born 3rd February last" As he was still employed in the Army it is possible that this is where they were stationed at that time. Benjamin Paul junior later married Ann BARRETT at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 7th Aug 1815 follow link for more information about his children. He died at West Back Street in Dorchester HT Parish aged 37 years and was buried there 15th Dec 1832.

Note:- Philip WINZAR (1763-1834) was the 4th child from the marriage of Philip WINZER to Elizabeth LESTER at St George's church in Fordington on 31st March 1757. Mary PURCHASE had an illigitimate child Sarah baptised at HT church on 15th Feb 1784 that was almost certainly fathered by Phillip WINZAR. See Vestry minutes for 6th June 1784 when the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor and nine other senior parishioners of Holy Trinity agree to pay the cost of their marriage. This would mean that responsibility for Sarah, who had settlement in Holy Trinity, would pass to Fordington Parish. Philip & Mary after their marriage here had the children shown below baptised at Fordington. Mary's husband Philip Winzar was buried at Fordington on 7th Oct 1834 recorded as being from Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester and his age was given as being 72 years old:-

George BLANDAMER Senior (1765-1847) was I believe the son of George BLANDAMER The Elder (1717-1806) follow link for background. George Blandamer Senior was an agricultural labourer and married Mary RUMSEY (1769-1852) who was the daughter of a blacksmith James RUMSEY by his wife Susannah. Mary was baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 16th May 1769. She had several elder sisters; her father was buried at HT on 12th Nov 1780, and her mother on 12th Dec 1782. After marriage they lived in All Saints parish where the first of their children was born before moving to Little Britain in Fordington where they still were in 1841. George died at the age of 82 being buried at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 12th Sep 1847. After his death Mary fell on hard times and was in the Union workhouse in 1851 ( her age is incorrectly recorded as 72 it should be 82 as she was 71/74 years old in 1841 Census), George was joined by his widow Mary on 27th May 1852 when her age is correctly given as 83. Children from this marriage were:-
      (1) Robert BLANDAMER (1793-1874) bap All Saints 21st April 1793. Robert married Sarah SIBLEY (1794-1875) in St Georges Church on 18th April 1815 and raised a family of 9 children there.

Frances LOCK (1772-1814) was the 3rd child from the marriage of George LOCK (1780-1837) to Mary POUNCY (1740-1796) who married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 2nd Sep 1764. Frances died at the age of 41 and although her abode was given as Holy Trinity she was actually buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 8th Jan 1814. John WHETHAM otp & Diana CHILDS of the same were married by Banns 01-Dec 1796 by me Rev James Fendal Hawkins Officiating Minister (his sig her mark) wit: John Keats & Bessy Brown (PR)

[Note:- John WHETHAM (1771 -1822) was a personal servant to the Rev. Thomas Morton Colson(1764-1830) and his will dated 4th May 1822 mentions his wife Diana and his 5 surviving children. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 27th May 1822 aged 52 years . His will was proved by the Rev Colson on 13th Feb 1823. Link to transcription of his will. Diane in fact outlived all her sons being buried at HT 7th Jan 1853 at the age of 89.

Children from the marriage were baptised in either Holy Trinity or St Peters. Not unusual in Dorchester as servants lived in rented accommodation and moved about the town but also St Peters, despite being the larger church ,was always a Chapelry of Holy Trinity and as such had the same vicar, in this case the Rev Nathaniel Templeman. Children were:-

    (1) James Whetham bap Holy Trinity church in Dorchester on 13th Oct 1797, he lived at Henninstown in the parish of Fordington but was buried at HT aged 41 on 5th Feb 1837.
    (2) Joseph Whetham The parish registers for St Peters record his birth as being on 24 Jan 1803? [His age at death suggests that he was actually born in 1802, and 1803 would also be too close to the birth of their next child? This transcription is from the IGI Film 1279495 and therefore needs to be rechecked but these records have not so far (Feb 2013) been imaged on ancestry.com. The parish register also records his baptism date at St Peters as 17 Apr 1803. He married at HT on 21 Feb 1819 to Ann MABER and also lived at Hennings town in Fordington, probably with his elder brother as he died there aged 35 just 2 months after his brothers death. He was buried at HT on the 12th Apr 1837.
    (3) Robert Whetham, baptised at HT on 5th July 1803, as stated above this is just 6 months after the baptism for Joseph at St Peters. Another strange thing is that their next child was named Robert Childs Whetham, Childs being Diana's maiden name. This made me look for a death which I could not locate until I realised that a Robert CHILDS was buried at St Peters in 1805
    (4) Robert Childs Whetham bap at St Peters 11th Aug 1805. This record comes from the IGI and again is unsubstatiated but parents are given as John and Hannah. This is unlikely as we dont have a marriage, Hannah and Diana sound similar, and their sons second name of Childs was Dianas Maiden name, and of course we know from John's will that a son by the name of Robert survived him. Robert Childs Whetham married at HT on 20th Oct 1834 to the widow Sarah BRODBY from the parish of Abbotsbury. They lived initially at Abbotsbury where in the 1841 Census Robert is described as being of independant means and Sarah has an 8 year old daughter Charlotte. They moved to live in South Street in Dorchester and Robert left a will dated 24th June 1844. He was buried at the age of 40 at Holy Trinity Church on 19th May 1846, his will being proved on 19th June 1846.
    (5) Mary Ann Whetham bap St Peters 5th Feb 1809 she may have married at Winterbourne Steepleton on 25th Feb 1828 to a John KING from Ridgeway in Bincombe both nearby villages.
    (6) Maria Whetham she married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 28 Jul 1846 to a hairdresser called William GIBBS the son of William GIBBS a native of Blandford. They had 2 children bap at St Peters (Media bap 28 Dec 1847 and Walter bap 15th July 1849 bur 23 Oct 1849) before Maria died and was buried as Maria WHETHAM from St Peters Parish in Dorchester at St Georges Church in Fordington on 19th Feb 1850 when her age was given as being 33 years old]

Edward CASHER (1778-1829) He is thought to be the 5th child from the marriage of David CASHER to Jane WILLIAMS at Charminster on 16 June 1766. See Fordington settlement examination dated 20th Feb 1808. This states that around the age of 13 he went to work in the house of Thomas TERRELL of Frome Whitfield for a year for which he was paid 40 shillings. He was then employed by The Honourable Lionel DAMER as a weekly labourer at Winterbourne Came for 7 years before he volunteered to be a substitute for someone selected during the ballot for the Dorset Militia for 9 years. Unfortunately no record of his Militia substitution(s) appears to survived. Appointment was for 3 years so he must have applied to remain in the Miltia to complete nine years. On August 1820 Mary CASHER the 49 year old wife of Edward CASHER a labourer resident in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester was arrested on suspicion of stealing some barley (with several others) and committed to Dorchester gaol, but subsequently released without charge. From 3rd Oct 1822 Edward and his family appear in the Poor Law records for Holy Trinity Parish. He and his son were bought a pair of shoes from time to time and the family given the odd short period of support. Edward was buried at FStG 7th Jan 1829. Mary his widow was buried at FStG 30th May 1850 aged 84 years. Their children:-
